Fashion Industry Broadcast had previously published an article on the best robbery movies of all time. In this article, they spoke about some old-time favourites like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Morgan Freeman, Jason Stathan, and Mark Whalburg, among a series of other great actors who acted in these films. Why are robbery films so exciting? Well, we have to admit that not all of them are, but the good ones and especially the really good ones are definitely worth the watch. The movies are exciting because they take a crime and create a story around it. You therefore get the perspective of both the robber and the robbed in the film and this creates an extra level of emotional attachment as you end up sympathising with both sides.
What about movies related to robberies of casinos? These are not in shortage either as you might already have guessed from our welcome post that we would cover the Oceans 11 series. But what other movies are out there related to casinos and robberies? Well, you will definitely remember all the 007 movies, most of the time there is a scene with a handsome James Bond arriving at a casino in his tuxedo, sitting at a roulette table and asking for his Martini shaken, not stirred.
But the success of the Oceans 11 franchise was phenomenal. The film had an initial budget of around $85 million and grossed an estimated $38 million on its opening weekend, which also saw it being the top box-office draw. You’ll remember the plot: Danny Ocean and his band of accomplices seek to rob three casinos in Las Vegas simultaneously. And they do a great job at it. Not only does this movie capture the cleverness and sheer genius of the plan to rob the casino, it is also done in a truly entertaining way.
Heist (2015) and Reindeer Games (2000) are two other films that fall under this genre and are worth looking into. Heist, for example, sees a father who is unable to pay for his child’s medical treatment and decides to partner with a co-worker to rob a casino. Things don’t go according to plan and they are, instead, forced to hijack a city bus. You also might enjoy 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001) and The Good Thief (2002), where the latter is a story about an ageing gambler who is on a losing streak. Although he may have made plans to rob a casino in Monte Carlo, someone has already tipped off the police before he makes a move. What happens next, you might ask? Well, watch it and find out.
But don’t just take our word for it. The International Movie Database (IMDB) is a great resource for checking out movies, reviews, and categorising film into almost any sub- and cross-section of genres that you can think of. All you need to do is simply type in the name of the film, check out its rating (which is very fair) and start watching. Simple as that!
